How to train a kitten to a tray and why it does not go to a tray

Often the owners of kittens find that they eat and play, but do not go to the toilet immediately after the baby comes into the house. Let’s look at the reasons for this behavior.

Kitten under 3-4 weeks old

Kittens cannot urinate and defecate on their own for up to 3 weeks – the mother cat stimulates these functions by licking the genital area of the kitten. Often this happens with individual kittens, which for some reason were left without a mother. In this case, the problem is solved very simply: after each feeding, the area of the anus and genitals of the kitten should be massaged with a cotton swab moistened with warm water for 20-30 seconds so that the kitten can go to the toilet. Of course, this is an unpleasant procedure, but it is vital for very small kittens.

Change of diet

A sudden change of food can lead to digestive problems in the kitten – this can result in diarrhea or constipation. Therefore, it is recommended to feed the kitten in the same way as the breeder during the first week after purchase. Good breeders usually pay great attention to this issue and often give new owners a supply of food for several days. Often the owners try to feed the kitten homemade food, but in the end they eat only boiled or even raw meat and boiled eggs, and this not only does not satisfy the growing kitten’s nutritional needs, but also leads to constipation.

Disease

In some cases, even very small kittens can have a severe helminth infection – the intestines of the animal are literally full of worms. In most cases, these kittens have a large swollen stomach. During the game, older kittens can swallow foreign objects (for example, threads or New Year’s rain), which can also lead to a lack of bowel obstruction. Usually this condition is accompanied by a general deterioration in health, refusal of food, and vomiting.

Misuse of the tray

Typically, kittens change their home at the age of 2-3 months, and although the kitten in the breeder’s house used the tray confidently, stress from environmental changes or even choosing a completely unsuitable toilet can lead to reluctance to use the new tray, since the skills to use it completely develop only to 6 for months.

Therefore, for the first time, it is worth restricting the movement of a kitten to one room in the house and regularly placing it in a tray after each feeding. Naturally, the tray should fit the size of the kitten so that it can climb into it on its own; it is also better to use a filler already familiar to him. If your kitten urinates only through the tray, look after it carefully: it may use the space under the bed or bathtub for the rest. The litter box should be located in a place not too crowded, but where the kitten can find it himself. The tray should also be stable and clean: cats do not like to use a dirty tray. It is not recommended to install it near the place of sleep and feeding, as well as in the “corridors” of the apartment.

Most kittens learn to use the tray in the breeder’s house. Usually this is done instinctively on the example of the mother, aged 1-1.5 months. However, sometimes, after moving to a new house, the kitten stops using the tray. If a kitten is taken away on the street, he may not understand what a tray is and why it is needed.
In the event that the owner of the kitten trusts the breeder and knows that the kitten is used to the tray, it is necessary to analyze the process of using the kitten in the toilet. Usually, all kitten owners make the same mistakes that cause the kitten to stop using the tray:

1) WHEN USING AN UNUSABLE FILLER

Initially, it is best to use a filler that your kitten is used to in his mother’s house. For a cat, filler is a very intimate thing. Some of them can scare away a kitten with a smell (for example, flavored fillers) or sound (for example, it is very difficult to smell silicone gel fillers).

2) UNAPPLICABLE PLACE FOR A TRAY

The kitten needs to retire while using the toilet, so it is unacceptable to put a tray in the corridor, hallway or in the kitchen.

3) SMALL TRAY SIZE

In some cases, the kitten does not want to use the tray because of its size. It is simply inconvenient for him to rummage through it, or he cannot sit comfortably in it.

4) EXPANSION OF AREA

Kittens who lived in the same room with their mother in the same house can be “confused” in a large new house, and for a start it is better to limit its space to one room. After the game, most kittens “forget” where the tray is, or cannot find it at the right time.

5) KITTEN EXPERIENCES STRONG EMOTIONS

Having stopped using the tray at the same time, the kitten begins to do his own thing on the bed, which means he does not like it. Behavioral disorders of this kind are quite acceptable in the first two weeks of staying in a new house, as the animal is experiencing severe stress from a change of scenery. The kitten should not be scolded, it will only worsen the situation and complicate its further adaptation. Limit, for example, access to the bedroom. The presence of such symptoms may indicate that the kitten is worried if this behavior occurs later than two weeks later. This may be jealousy for the child, resentment against the owner or even the onset of the disease. This behavior disorder can occur during puberty, in which case the cat should be neutered or sterilized.

Having eliminated the reasons for this, it is necessary to restore the functionality of the tray. Cats are clean animals, so using a tray and a filler is a natural need, dictated by instincts. When you look after the kitten and notice that he is looking for a place for the toilet, take him to the tray. The kitten usually sniffs and tries to dig up the floor at this time.

In case he does not have time to the tray, he needs to wipe the urine with a cloth, which then put in the tray. The place where the kitten accidentally went to the toilet is washed with a solution of vinegar or a special means for removing urine. At the time when the kitten owner is not at home, its territory should be limited during the period of development of the tray. It can be a single room or even a spacious cage. If your kitten fulfilled your desire, he should be encouraged to do so.
